FREE CROCHET PATTERN: The Patriot Koozie (Perfect for the 4th!)

The Patriot Koozie is something new for me. I never used to be a fan of “koozies.” I don’t like the name (I don’t know why, lol), and I don’t like those foam things you normally see people using! I think they’re just tacky. But… after a series of events, here we are: a koozie crochet pattern!

I had some leftover tencel and cotton yarn, and I just love the smooth texture it has so so so much. I could squish those skeins all day long. I am a HUGE fan of mason jars, and I make smoothies a lot, so I decided to make a mason jar cozy. That way I could enjoy my cold smoothie without my hands getting cold and wet. Well, not only did it keep my hands nice and warm, the texture is so satisfying to hold on to! Smooth, soft yarn, with stitch definition. It feels relaxing just holding onto it 🙂

Since we are quickly approaching summer, and with it the 4th of July, I thought making a red, white, and blue mason jar cozy would be cute. I was right! Here’s where things took a turn, though…

I made my mason jar cozy and I was happy. I planned to share the pattern with you all and spread the mason jar love. But then I thought about all the things people drink on the 4th of July. Some of those things come in mason jars, but some do not…

Branching Out

I decided to go against my normal dislike of “koozies,” and make a pretty one! The beer can came first. I gave it a test run with a nice cold beer (Oh, the sacrifices I make to get you lovely patterns… 🙂 ) and I was so happy with how it turned out! If all koozies looked this good, I would be happy to see them in everyone’s hands!

Lastly, the pint glass was an addition I hadn’t thought of, but my Grandma asked me to make one for her dinner glasses. I adjusted the pattern to fit, and that might honestly be my favorite version of the Patriot Koozie ever. It is so comfortable to hold onto, and (my favorite thing about all of them) it has a built-in coaster on the bottom!

The Yarn

I used two separate types of yarn for this koozie crochet pattern because Yarn Bee Fresh Haven doesn’t have a navy blue. I wish they did! I had some I Love This Cotton lying around, and even though it’s a cotton yarn and the Fresh Haven is tencel, there isn’t too much of a look/ feel difference except for a tiny more sheen on the Fresh Haven. In hindsight, I’m really happy I used I Love This Cotton for the bottom because it’s got a little more body to it so it absorbs any condensation on the bottom of the cup nicely.
