Homemade Potato Chips – In The Air Fryer!

Picture this: It’s late afternoon and you’ve got the munchies. You don’t want anything too heavy, because dinner’s just around the corner. But something crunchy…something salty… that would hit the spot! How about some potato chips?

Chips are notorious for not being healthy. And really, traditional chips aren’t! They’ve got tons of terrible oils, fats, and preservatives that keep you wanting more. But, what if you could make delicious potato chips at home that hit the craving for crunch and salt, but without all the bad stuff? Would you be interested?

I had this exact craving just the other day, and instead of driving to the store and paying an inflated price for processed crap, I took matters into my own hands and pulled out my air fryer! The angels sang and the heavens shone down on me in that moment… it was a stroke of genius!

How to Make Chips in the Air Fryer

Enough with the story time, let’s get to the good stuff and learn how to make chips in the air fryer! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Potatoes
  • A knife or mandolin
  • Avocado oil
  • Air fryer
  • Seasoning of your choice (we’ll go over a few options)

Step 1: Prepare the potatoes

The first thing you need to do is to slice your potatoes. Depending on the size of the potato, you will get more chips. So evaluate as you go; a personal serving will probably work with one or two potatoes, but more people equals more potatoes.

Take your knife or mandolin if you have one (but be careful and don’t cut yourself!), and slice your potatoes THINLY. As thin as you can. The thinner you slice, the crispier they will get and the quicker they’ll cook.

Once your potatoes are sliced, toss them in a colander and give them a good rinse to get off the starch.

Step 2: Seasoning and Oil

After the potatoes are rinsed, it’s time to season and oil. Here I’ll go over a few different seasoning options, but this is where your creativity can shine! So do what you want!

Soaking potatoes in vinegar
  1. Salt and Vinegar – Transfer your rinsed potatoes to a medium sized bowl, and pour enough white vinegar in to just cover the potatoes. Sprinkle with some kosher salt, and let soak for 20-30 minutes. After soaking, dump out vinegar.
  2. Barbecue – Salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, brown sugar, and onion powder. I don’t really measure these things, but sprinkle in a little of everything until I get the “barbecue” color I’m looking for.
  3. Salt and Pepper – Simple and straight forward! Salt and pepper to your liking!

Once your potatoes are seasoned, sprinkle in a tablespoon of avocado oil and mix the potatoes thoroughly.

Step 3: Time to Fry!

Now’s the moment you’ve been waiting for! It’s time to make your tasty chips!

Lay a single layer of potatoes on the bottom of the air fryer. It’s ok if a few overlap, but don’t overcrowd the air fryer. Then things will take too long to cook, and you’ll have some burnt chips and some soggy chips. It’s better to do a few batches to get perfection (check out this reel to see how I layer my potatoes in the fryer basket).

Insert the basket into the air fryer, and then cook at 380 degrees for 15 minutes. Take the basket out and give them a toss. If you need a little more time, cook at 380 degrees in five minute increments. Each air fryer is different so it’s hard to nail down a specific time. But after about 15-18 minutes, your potatoes will be hot, crispy, and perfectly seasoned!
